combat level calculations

Post by SamFox »

According to the website, "combat level" is calculated using the formula:

3/4 REACTION + 3/4 DEXTERITY + TOUGHNESS + MIGHT + 3/4 ATTACK + 3/4 DEFENSE + 1/2 MATTER

The website also says the old formula is used on the pages that calculate your level. This leads me to 2 questions. First, has anyone done a script already to calculate "combat level"? (If not, I guess I'll do one.) Second, I see where some 'monsters' have an ignore level posted, based on the combat level; presumably this is based on the new formula. Some pages say that it's in debate still as to which is accurate. So far I've worked more by walking into new areas and seeing if I'm attacked - usually if I am I get killed. Is there a better or more complete way to figure that stuff out?

Thanks in advance either question.

Yes, there have been multiple combat level calculators made over the years.

I'll try to find a link and will edit this post.

This site is very useful for just about anything so you would do well to bookmark it. http://www.el-cel.com

http://www.el-cel.com/info/combat.php (old combat level formula)

http://www.paradoxcomputers.com.au/el_cl.php (korrode's new combat level formula)

There was a calculator somebody made that gave both "old" combat level and "new" combat level but darn if I can find it now.

Some mobs ignore based on combat level and some based on defense level. The EL wiki has that information if you look up any specific mob. Examples:

Forest Chimeran, based on defense level
https://www.el-wiki.net/Forest_Chimeran

Yeti, based on combat level:
https://www.el-wiki.net/Yeti

Since the debate has never been settled satisfactorily as to whether old combat level or new combat level is more accurate, best situation is to look at both numbers and use caution. While generally I would trust Korrode's work as being the most accurate, this calculator was made a long time ago and I would expect some mob stats were tinkered with since he made it. Also note that some mobs listed in the Wiki are done with old calculations and some offer the new. So confusing!

"Pr0 tip":
An easy on-the-fly rule of thumb: If you look up Creatures in the ingame Encyclopedia, you can get a feel for how hard a mob is (and your likely ability to handle it or not) because they are listed in order of difficulty and listed in two groups: aggressive and non-aggressive.
